Frelsi

Í fagra leyndardómsfulla skóginum
bjó bjarndýr.
Háu sterku trén
náðu nærri til tunglskinsins
á þessari vindasömu vetrarnótt.
Gráðug rotta kemur fram á sjónarsviðið,
omnivores,
sem étur allt
sem vill ber,
ber
sem bjarndýrið sjálft hafði týnt.
Rottan vildi stela berjum bjarndýrsins,
og gerði það.
Vildi stela friði bjarndýrsins,
eignum hans,
friði hans.
‘‘En ég mun ná berjum mínum
tilbaka.
Bíddu bara og sjáðu’’, sagði
bjarndýrið við rottuna,
með alvarleika í andlitsdráttum hans.

Freedom

In the magnificent mystical forest
a bear lived.
The high resilient trees
nearly reaching the moonlight
on this windy winter night.
A greedy rat appears, an omnivores,
who eats everything
wanting some berries,
berries
which the bear had gathered together himself.
The rat wanted to steal the bear’s
berries,
and did so.
Wanted to steal the bear’s
peace,
his property,
his freedom.
‘‘But I will get my
berries back.
You just wait and see’’, said
the bear to the rat,
with a stern look on his face.

Frelsi

Grunnur alls frelsis
er hugsanafrelsið.

Ef við erum herrar
eigin hugsunar

en látum ekki stjórnast
af skrumi og múgsefjun,

þá vinnum við
óhjákvæmilega

að tjáningarfrelsi
og mannréttindum.

Thór Stefansson

Freedom

The basis of all freedom
is freedom of thought.

If we are masters
of our own thoughts

without allowing ourselves to be led
by rhetoric and demagogy,

then we will inevitably
work

for freedom of expression
and human rights.
